You get a few additional features which make it easier to make connections on gay.com, and access to pictures you wouldn't otherwise see. But you can try it out for free and see if it is the kind of site that interests you. You need to be warned, however, that the site is fairly sneaky. Even for paying members, you can't avoid the pop-up ads. Also check out all of the fine print before you do anything which might even remotely charge your credit card. We found the text in their sign-up pages to be misleading. For example, they may offer you 'next month free' when you go to cancel. But what they really mean is that you will pay for the following month, then the month after that is free. There isn't anywhere in the text that spells this out, so be very wary of them.
When it comes to customer service, gay.com makes even AOL look like Neiman Marcus. It is truly atrocious. They do not respond to customer service emails, and if you have to speak with them on the phone, be prepared to deal with some of the most unhappy customer service reps you will ever come across. These are the people that even AOL won't let talk to their members! They are very surly and rude. So just be warned that they may be one of the largest sites out there, but they treat their paying customers as poorly as we have seen any site on the web, bar none. PlanetOut.com is run by the same company. We do not have any personal experience with their operation, but you should expect the same type of shoddy treatment there as well. It is really too bad, as the gay community deserves better treatment than this - especially from a management team that should know better. Good luck if you try them out, but just know you have been warned.
